PHIXER for Apple Music / Spatial vs phone mono fold
Spatial headphones can feel huge while the same Apple Music master thins on a phone speaker or after Spatial fold-back to stereo / mono. DSP fold, loudness encode, and a tiny mono-ish driver eat bass, side beds, and vocal body. Still check phase with PHIXER before release. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a Spatial renderer, not a loudness tool, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on a phone.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an Apple Spatial encoder, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / phone-speaker check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo through Spatial fold-back and phone playback. Still check phase with PHIXER before you release to Apple Music.
Three Apple Music / Spatial collapse modes
- Phone speaker / pocket fold. Commuters often hear a collapsed mono-ish path. Mute wide FX briefly and re-check fold on a real phone speaker, not only Spatial headphones.
- Spatial fold-back to stereo / mono. Immersive beds that sound huge in Spatial can soft-drop when the path folds back. Habit: true L+R sum on the stereo bounce before you upload.
- Spotify / YouTube / mastering cousins. Playlist phone fold, YouTube downmix, and master-bus mono-check share the same L+R habit. Cousins: PHIXER for Spotify / streaming phone mono · PHIXER for YouTube Loudness / mono check · Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
Fast Apple Music / phone-mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the master / stereo bounce bus. Listen to vocal body, bass, and side beds.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: S and SH consonants, kick thump, wide pads under the hook.
- Play the bounce on a phone speaker (local file or a quiet Apple Music test playlist). Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs. Note which path thins the phone fold vs Spatial headphones.
- If you ship Spatial, also check the stereo fold-back path after any limiter / loudness / encoder pass, not only before cleanup. Still check phase with PHIXER before release if residual L/R fights remain.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono / L+R listen on a phone speaker
Hard L+R sum on the master / stereo bounce. Habit: mono compatibility checklist and the 60-second audition above. Spatial vs mono is not the same listen as headphones-only.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Dual mics, stacked stems, dual-path beds. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools
Nudge dual mics, stacked takes, and wide beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.
4. Prefer correlated voice and lows for phone speakers and Spatial fold-back
Keep critical voice and low-mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: Spotify / phone mono and car / Bluetooth / phone speaker mono fold.
5. Only then still check phase with PHIXER before release
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B on a phone, not only in Spatial. Place it after EQ/compression and before the limiter when you master for streaming. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo. Mastering placement: Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
Apple Music / Spatial path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music on a phone speaker | Master loses body when the phone folds | Hard mono bounce; check on a real phone speaker |
| Spatial fold-back to stereo | Immersive bed soft-drops on fold-back | True L+R on the stereo bounce before upload |
| Wide pad / Haas under the hook | Swish or cancel on fold | Less width in lows; correlated center |
| Dual-path vocal / stacked takes | Body gone when both play | Polarity then timing |
| Loudness / encoder pass after mix | Fine in Spatial headphones, thin after upload | Re-check fold after limiter / encode; still check phase with PHIXER before release |
| Spotify / streaming cousin | Playlist on a phone speaker thins the same way | Spotify mono |
| YouTube loudness cousin | Downmix / phone mono after upload | YouTube loudness / mono check |

Spotify, YouTube loudness, and mastering cousins (short version)
- Spotify / streaming playlist fold on a phone speaker shares the same L+R habit as Apple Music Spatial fold-back and phone mono. Full write-up: PHIXER for Spotify / streaming phone mono.
- YouTube downmix and phone mono are the same story for uploaded beds. Guide: PHIXER for YouTube Loudness / mono check before upload.
- On a master bus, place phase repair after EQ/compression and before the limiter or clipper. Guide: Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on dual mics or stacked stems (flip polarity first).
- Obvious attack misalignment (nudge first).
- You only need a mono print, not a stereo bed that must survive Spatial fold-back and phone fold.
- Spatial encode / Atmos object placement problems (wrong tool).
- Loudness, LUFS, or stream-encoder problems (wrong tool).
